To the Land Touching the Heavens (2014)
commissioned by the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver Jazz Orchestra
Jazz Ensemble: 5 woodwinds, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, Vibraphone, Piano, Bass, Drums
9 minutes
Like my piece "To Kyoto", which was inspired by riding the Shinkansen train from Tokyo to Kyoto, "To the Land Touching the Heavens" was also inspired by a more low tech train ride: riding the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Colorado. This steam engine was originally part system of rail lines that helped bring the coal and miners to and from the mines during the 19th and early 20th century.
