Fire Quiet (2021)

In my last high school years, I had a progressive rock group with my friend Mark Hei. Generally, I wrote the lyrics, played saxophone (later attempting electric guitar), and sometimes composing music, while Mark played keyboards, programmed the drums on some early drum machines, composed music, and handled all of the production elements. Two of our early pieces were called “Fire to Man” and “Quiet Earth.” This solo piano piece “Fire Quiet”—dedicated to Mark and commissioned for him by his sister Jennie (who had to put up with our loud youthful band exuberances emanating from the basement of Mark’s house)—pays homage to both of those earlier works by creating short variations on two fragments: one from part of the melody I composed for “Fire to Man,” and another from a motif Mark composed for “Quiet Earth.”
