Lost in the Stars (1999)
3 woodwinds, Trumpet, Trombone, Vibraphone, Marimba (or Guitar or Harp), Piano, Percussion, 2 violins, 2 Cellos, Bass
(substitute parts available for woodwinds)
12 minutes
The title comes from a poem I wrote just after graduating from high school. In the poem, a solitary traveler wanders the universe, searching and exploring. Carl Sagan, in his groundbreaking television series, Cosmos, imagines an interstellar space-ship, piloted by a single life form, also exploring the mysteries of the universe. That image has always held a particular fascination for me; profane, beautiful, ebullient, and melancholy. It speaks of the eternal; not only of the infinity of the universe itself, but also the infinite capacity and imagination of the mind to explore the unknown (and the unknowable).
