"The People Get Tired of Dying" from The Grey Land (2018)
(Wordless 6-part choir)

“The People Get Tired of Dying” is scene 1 that opens the mono-opera The Grey Land. The title comes from a short story by Henry Dumas, a poet/writer/activist who was killed, after an altercation, by NYC transit police in the late 1960s. My composition connects contemporary life’s struggles with those of the ancestors—as Ta-Nehisi Coates describes as “the vastness of Black people across space-time.”
