The music of composer and conductor Joseph C. Phillips Jr. seeks to generate emotions in the listener that resonate with mystery, wonder, and beauty.

Whether it is large scale compositions such as Vipassana from the latest Numinous CD on innova, wind ensemble commissions The Long Now and The Gates of the Wonder-World Open, smaller works such as Beautiful Thing written for singer-songwriter Joy Askew and The Spell of a Vanishing Loveliness which was inspired by an intimate moment from September 11, 2001 or collaborative projects such as To Begin the World Over Again, with choreographer Edisa Weeks, an evening length dance work based upon Thomas Paine's writings, the music of Joseph C. Phillips Jr. humbly attempts to reflect something beyond notes and sounds, something beyond the ordinary.

Deftly and organically transmuting inspiration from contemporary classical, jazz, world, and popular music as well as literature, science, and cinema, Phillips's "sonic poetry" is a distinctive and individual voice that draws listeners into its own musical universe in order to challenge, enlighten, and refresh.
