2024 was about travels and the beginnings of future life changes. Some of the travel was @1619opera research under my Hodder Fellowship (Liverpool, Portugal, Colorado) and some was personal (Ushuaia in Patagonia, Sydney, Fiji (all long-held dreams)). But the year started with five scenes from @thegreyland at the Colour of Music Festival in Charleston, SC with @brandonkeithbrownconductor conducting an orchestra featuring @rebeccalhargrove singing. The beginnings of my CoLABoratory Fellowship with the American Composers Orchestra and the development of my piece “We Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident” and the publication of one of my string quartets “Shibboleths” by @aliaspress.

In the spring I did a preliminary research visit to Liverpool, England for the third opera in the cycle, where I met with Liz Stewart, head of the @museumofliverpool . And two weeks later the family joined me on a first visit to Portugal, where I continued my third opera research in Lisboa, visiting a number of museums and taking the @africanlisbontour , and Lagos, where I visited the place where the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade began in 1444–now a museum called the Mercado de Escravos (Slave Market).

That fall I was awarded @themapfund grant for the second opera in the cycle, a @nyscouncilonthearts grant for my piece for @amercomporch , I began writing the libretto for that second opera, I was beginning the formal plans for my retirement from teaching @ps321bk , and finally we serendipitously found the property that would eventually become @clubdeltadelasartes , although a couple of visits and a few months away from that really becoming a reality. At the end of 2024 it was all just an exciting hope and possibility!
