In December 2022 I was awarded a Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University to research for @1619opera cycle. The year-long Fellowship was to begin in September of 2023, but that year started off with an unofficial research trip to Mexico City for study for the sixth opera in the cycle. In May “Never Has Been Yet” was performed at Carnegie Hall (first time my music graced that hall) by Emma Taggert @emmataggartpiano and Justin Armstrong @kidarmstrong57 and “The Poet Dreams of Mountains”, commissioned by the Adelphi Guitar Quartet under direction of Jay Sorce @jay_sorce premiered. And because of that commission I had the funds to get Numinous together again after years away.
That end of June was the first time since @thegreyland recording sessions in early 2020 that we’d met, so I used the opportunity to gather the largest Numinous group at Opera America’s HQ to do a first reading of So Far Behind Now Because of Then, the first opera in #1619operacycle! It was an emotional reunion as 50 musicians, new and old friends spanning the 23 year history of the ensemble, including Rebecca L Hargrove @rebeccalhargrove and Ariadne Greif @ariadnegreif singing scenes, began to bring the opera to life!
That summer I was inducted into the Recording Academy, had some new headshots by Mark Elzey @markelzey, and more that fall by Karen Wise @karenwisephoto, and officially began my Hodder Fellowship. Numinous returned to perform at Roulette, not only music from So Far Behind at Roulette, but also music from George Brandon, Bob Goldberg @bobholdberg, Steven Swartz @stevenswartz and Anthony Branker @anthonybranker. The year ended in Colorado as I took my first official research trip under the Hodder to study at the Animas Museum @animasmuseum and Ute Indian Museum @utemuseum all in preparation to begin writing the second opera in 1619 cycle based in the Reconstruction period of US history.
