“Pandemia 1. Numinous 0.”
As life was continuing to open up again, despite COVID floating around in the background, more music performances were happening just not by Numinous. I still wasn’t ready to subject the musicians to meeting together for a project, so it was other avenues that my music was heard.
Simone Dinnerstein @simonedinnerstein and Tay Freeman @_tay.freeman performed “Never Has Been Yet” at the Meany Center @meanycenter back in Seattle; thanks to Tyshawn Sorey @dr.tyshawnsorey_official , my chamber piece “To Kyoto” was performed by the San Francisco Symphony @sfsymphony , which I traveled SF to watch him conduct it; my commissioned solo snare piece “Limn” was performed by by Aidan Smith @asumisens ; I had an amazing week in Alaska (my first visit, and a longtime dream!) for series of portrait concerts through Wild Shore New Music @wildshorenewmusic ; and a second incredible visit to Alaska for another longtime dream, the two-week experience of Composing in the Wilderness Fellowship @composinginthewilderness !
Throughout the year I was continuing to compose So Far Behind Now Because of Then, the first opera in @1619opera cycle, and by the beginning of October I had finished! I also got to finally meet in-person Dr Keri Merritt @kerileighmerritt , when she came to NYC. Dr Merritt’s amazing book, Masterless Men, will be part of the inspiration for the fourth opera in the cycle, along with writer Kelley Rourke’s @kelley_rebecca family story. The year ended with the release of The Crossing’s @thecrossingchoir Carols After a Plague album, which included my piece “The Undisappeared.”
