After the premiere of The Grey Land in 2018, the next year, 2019, was spent trying to figure things out to come up with a way to record my monoopera. With The Grey Land, my largest and most ambitious composition to date (and about 4x as expensive as the others), I wasn’t sure what I was going to do to get the album recorded. While I had hoped to record in 2019, I just wasn’t able to make it happen. But by that summer I had a plan and begun working on the details of the recording—including during a retreat at a friend’s upstate home and a family Christmas vacation to one of our favorite places, Rio de Janeiro.
The second music event this year was composing Four Freedoms. I was commissioned by the Maryland Opera Studio in the summer and spent that summer and into the fall working on the composition (including over Thanksgiving when I was in Hong Kong at the wedding of a friend and former student). While at the beginning of December I was ahead of my personal deadline, it really took a 4-day, 18-hour December composing marathon, in Colorado, to get the opera finished and to the Maryland Opera Studio in time for them to begin rehearsals in January 2020.
