I can be forgiven for thinking that with the year 2009 being so busy that that was portentous for future musical activity.
April 2009 was the official release of the second Numinous album, “Vipassana.” Released on innova recordings we had two performances of the composition that year: May 16 at the Puffin Room in Soho in Manhattan; and October 28 at the old Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope (two places where the buildings are still there but the music is not). I also had two wind band commissions premiere, which I conducted that year: “The Long Now” in April with the St. Olaf College Band; and “The Gates of the Wonder-World Open” in May, with my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Maryland Wind Ensemble, in celebration of the 100th year of bands at the University. Both commissions were due at the same time—February of 2009–so that was a fun few months finishing 😅. March 2009 my composer collective Pulse began a new project Songs of the Hudson River in celebration of the Quadricentennial of Henry Hudson’s journey on the river. It was a collaboration with singer Joy Askew and we performed the wonderful pieces at the old Galapagos in Williamsburg, the old Roulette in Soho, and upstate at the Hudson Opera House. That year I was also commissioned by Simone Dinnerstein to write a piece for Face the Music to be performed the following year at her new concert series Neighborhood Classics at PS 321. The NY Daily News interviewed us and featured us in an article—including visiting me in my kindergarten music class. Also late in 2009 was when I started initial thoughts for what would be come Changing Same and also the connection with New Amsterdam Records began when they reached out to me and we started discussing possibly working together. So it was a good, busy year and a harbinger of things to come.
